In the 1890's, long before there was Canyon Group®, a pioneering woman sought to improve the familiar process of candlewicking, brought to America from her native England. By simply fluffing the yarn on cut ends by hand, she could create a design. This innovation spawned an industry. In the 1930's, early automation moved this cottage crafting into factories, which hummed along busily until the United States entered World War II in 1941. During wartime, most chenille factories were either sold or shuttered. At the close of the war in 1945, men returned to their families, automation advanced further, and the majority of chenille factories were now making carpeting, enjoying the benefits of the post WW II housing boom.
CANYON GROUP EST. 1991
Our Canyon Group chenille bathrobes have garnered a global reputation for being the warmest and fluffiest, adored not only by fans but also by celebrities. Our product range includes the traditional48-inch wrap and zip-front robes, kimono-wrap short robes, shower wraps, men's robes, and jackets all crafted from our own chenille fabric. What sets us apart from competitors is our unique production process. We start with backing fabric and yarn sourced from local suppliers in America. The dyed and finished chenille is then sent to the Canyon Group's Dyeing site, where robes are skillfully sewn, and distinctive designs are tufted onto each finished robe. By operating from our central location, we are able to minimize shipping costs for our valued customers.
Canyon Chenille, Inc. is proud to manufacture our own cotton/polyester chenille right here in the USA! We offer two types of chenille - plush and demi. Our plush chenille is very soft and thick with dense chenille “ribbing” and is perfect for cooler weather. Our demi chenille is lighter weight with less dense “ribbing” and is ideal for warmer weather
or those customers who simply prefer a lighter weight robe. Either way, Canyon Group‛s chenille offers outstanding quality and durability.
Canyon Group® chenille starts with backing fabric and yarn sourced in America. Our chenille is made in Georgia, the birthplace of the chenille industry. Our dyed and finished chenille robes are sewn and unique designs are tufted onto each finished robe. Shipping from this central location, we are able to keep shipping costs down for our customers.Canyon Group® chenille is manufactured from fabric backing and yarn of a 50:50 poly cotton blend and meets the flammability standards for adult sleep-ware.
Because Canyon Chenille makes our own chenille, dyes it and tufts the unique designs, there is huge possibility for customers to either mix and match from the different body styles, vibrant colors and unique designs, or have us develop a unique color or design specifically for you. We have had our customers request that the name or establishment be put on the robe, or the name of a resort area tufted on the robe or jacket to make a unique memento.
Yes, not all chenille is alike
Unfortunately, many fabrics that are called chenille and are, infact, not. True chenille consists of a backing material and tufted with continual rows of fluffy yarn. This process is called ‘Tufting’ and is done by hundreds of needles side by side, creating a fabric with a fluffy face and row upon parallel row of yarn stitches on the back. These rows are how chenille derived its name. Chenille, French for caterpillar, connotes those rows of yarn as seen from the back. No lines of tufted yarn means not real chenille. Tufting chenille is a slow and laborious process, and many decide to neglect the process, but adopt the name. The term chenille has come to be used by many to represent any number of fluffy fabrics, regardless of their composition or process. Currently, Canyon Chenille is the only manufacturer of true chenille remaining in North America. There are two main measurements that are important to the quality and feel of chenille: gauge and knap. Gauge is the distance between needles and therefore between the rows of tufted yarn. Gauge can be used to create different looks and feel from tight gauge to have a dense, uniform finished side, to wide gauge to have the rows more distinct on the finished side. The second measurement is knap, which is the length of yarn above the fabric backing. Foreign produced chenille will have both a wide gauge and a short knap resulting in a lightweight fabric that lacks the look and feel of Canyon Group’s higher quality chenille.
